Set a date and time for the office party that is convenient for all involved. Try not to make it on a date when there is other important business commitments.

When to Start Planning

There is no right answer to this! Some organisations book their parties in January and others leave it to November.

However from our experience many of the prime party dates are quickly snapped up. So for the best choice, the earlier you start, the better.

Interesting Facts

Researchers have found that the office Christmas party can fuel drama between both colleagues and bosses with good and bad results!

10% confessed to having started a relationship
10% admitted to flirting with the boss
25% said they had met their future spouse over the punch bowl
20% had been caught canoodling with a colleague
5% confessed to throwing punches during the celebrations
5% admitted letting more than their hair down by stripping in public

Silent Night

Silent Night, in addition to being the most popular Christmas carol around the world, is also THE song that stopped a war. On Christmas Eve during World War I, German soldiers in the trenches held up Christmas trees lit with candles and a few of the soldiers began singing Silent Night, "Stille nacht, heilige nacht".

Soon others along the German line joined in and then the British soldiers recognizing the melody joined them in the singing of this beautiful song. Soldiers from both sides left the trenches and met in the middle and some of them even exchanged gifts. An undeclared truce began and there was no more fighting for the remainder of the night. There was "Peace on Earth" for that one night in history.

CHRISTMAS PARTY GAMES

Gift Wrap Game
What you will need :
Gift items, wrapping paper, tape, music - that can be turned on and off.
Wrap each gift item in several layers of paper (the number of layers depends on how long you want the game to last)
Give your group / groups a gift and tell them when you turn on the music to pass the gift , ( like in the game hot potato) when you turn off the music who ever has the gift gets to take off ONE layer of paper, continue this until the last layer of paper is taken off ,and whoever has the gift unwrapped gets to keep it.
Gift Giving Game - Great for Christmas Parties and Exchanges
Everyone brings a gift to the party, this is fun for gift exchanges during the holidays. TO BEGIN: Everyone stands in a circle holding the gift he/she brought to the party. Someone reads the story, every time the word RIGHT is read, everybody passes his gift to the right. Every time the word LEFT is read, gifts are passed to the left. The gift that each person is holding at the end of the story is the gift he keeps.

Story Example:
The Right Family Christmas Story Christmas was almost here and Mother RIGHT was finishing the Christmas baking. Father RIGHT, Susie RIGHT, and Billy RIGHT returned from their last minute Christmas errands. "There's not much LEFT to be done," said Father RIGHT as he came into the kitchen. "Did you leave the basket of food at Church?" asked Mother RIGHT? "I LEFT it RIGHT where you told me to," said Billy RIGHT." "I don't have any money LEFT." The hall telephone rang, and Susie RIGHT LEFT to answer it. She rushed back and told the family, "Aunt Tillie RIGHT LEFT a package for us RIGHT on Grandma RIGHT's porch. I'll go over there RIGHT now and get it," she said as she LEFT in a rush. Father RIGHT LEFT the kitchen and brought in the Christmas Tree. By the time Susie RIGHT returned, Mother RIGHT, Father RIGHT, and Billy RIGHT had begun trimming the tree. The entire RIGHT family sang carols as they finished the decorating. Then they LEFT all the presents arranged under the tree and went to bed, hoping they had selected the RIGHT gifts for their family. Now I hope you have the RIGHT present for yourself, because that's all that's LEFT of our story, except to wish you a Merry Christmas, isn't that RIGHT?

The Holiday Gift Grab - Many Variations are out there
Have all of your guests bring a small gift that costs under $10 - $20. You'll need to have one gift for everyone attending. (You may want to have some spares just in case) The gifts can be anything from gag gifts to wine to movie tickets, hot sauces, teddy bear, anything goes. As guest arrive place the gifts in one central area. Once everyone is there, put numbers (1 for each guest) on pieces of paper (1 per piece), fold and put in a hat. Have the guests choose a number, this determines who goes first. The guest with number 1 goes first and selects a gift from the pile. The person who is number 2 has a choice take Number 1's gift or select one from the pile, if Number 2 takes Number 1's gift then number 1 can pick from the pile again. Once you get to the 4, 5, and 6th guest, it will get tricky because only two people can steal gifts from the other guests.

Example: Guest 5 - takes Guest 3's gift (One gift grab)
Guest 3 in turn takes Guest's 2's gift (Two gift grabs)
Stop: Now guest 2 must pick a new gift from the pile.
Now we proceed to Guest 6 and so on.
Remember there is no gift grab if a gift is chosen from the pile.

This continues until the person with the highest number goes and either grabs a gift from another or chooses the last gift from the pile.

More Rules:
You can't grab a gift back from the person that just took it.
Options
Make a theme of the gifts - Register Party, Worst Gifts (See what people come up with and be creative.)

Wrapped Gift Game Take 2 - It Gets Harder
Require a small wrapped gift and a pair of dice. The gift should be wrapped in a solid box. We had a gift certificate wrapped in a hard jewellery case.
Wrap the gift with paper, then masking tape, paper, masking tape, paper
(the more layers, the harder the game). Players, as many as there are to play, sit in a circle. Each player takes a turn at rolling 2 dice, first person to roll doubles, get to start unwrapping the gift, the catch, they have to wear a pair of mittens (wool, oven mitts, etc). Players cannot use teeth. Immediately players continue to take turns to roll the dice, next player to roll doubles take the mitts and a turn at unwrapping the gift. Play continues until the gift is unwrapped, the player to unwrap the last piece of paper gets the gift.
Hint - to build the excitement, do not tell players that you used masking tape and several layers of paper.

Gift Unwrap Game Take 3:
Number of players: about 10-30
Type: Can be a stunt, if the group is very large, or the entire party may play
Winner: The person who FINISHES unwrapping the present
How to play: A gift is placed in the center of the group. A basket
with dice is passed around. When a person rolls double sixes, they run up
to the gift, don the hat, scarf and gloves (goggles if you want too!) and
begin unwrapping as fast as they can. (The more items they need to put on the less they'll be able to unwrap) The dice continue to be passed and as
soon as someone else rolls double sixes, they take their turn at the present. Play continues until the present is completely unwrapped.
Items needed: Dice, Basket, Hat, Gloves, Scarf, one very well wrapped
present. It helps to have several layers of wrapping paper and even boxes within boxes to keep make the game more challenging.

Gift Giving Game #4
This is a fun and exciting way to exchange gifts. Each person brings a wrapped unmarked gift. Or you can bring white elephants gifts for added fun. Everyone sits in a circle and the gifts are placed in a pile in the middle of the circle. Write numbers from 1-??, depending on the number of gifts, on small pieces of paper. Do not number the gifts. Fold papers and place them in a hat or some other container.

Each person randomly picks a paper (number) from the hat. Start with the
person holding number 1. He/she picks a gift and opens it. Number two can either pick a gift from the pile or take the gift from number one. Number one then chooses a wrapped gift from the pile and opens it. Number three can either take a gift from numbers 1 or 2 or pick one from the pile to open. . There is no limit on the number of gifts one person can open if others continue to take the gift they have opened. Each gift can only change hands three times through out the game. The person with the gift on the third exchange keeps it. Each person ends up with only one gift. You may end up with the same gift you brought.
You may also play this game without opening the gifts til the end when
everyone has a gift in hand and all the exchanging is over. It's not only funny to see people vie for a gift when they don't even know what is actually in the package but also when the gift is opened..

Gift Grab # 4 - Card Game
The idea is to have 2 decks of cards, pass out one deck of cards to everyone at the party circling around giving everyone one at a time until all the cards are gone. Hopefully everyone will come out with an even number of cards.. Have a bunch of nice little gifts wrapped 5 or 10 depending on the amount of guests.. Put the gifts in the centre of the room..

Then with the second Deck of Cards have someone call out each card, the person that has the card that is called gets up and picks a prize, when all the prizes are taken from the table, everyone can steal the gifts from each other, when the whole deck has been called out the people with the prizes on their laps keep them..

This game is fun because everyone likes to pick a certain prize that looks interesting and they try to steal it back and forth and other people try not to let you remember they have a prize, but of course they have to keep them in the open.... (This game works for birthdays too.)

Sock Guessing Game
You take a new pair of thick thermal socks. You know the grey ones that hunters use in the winter. Then you put objects, that you see or use around Christmas time, into the socks. Make sure you put the same things in each sock. Things like holly, scotch tape, ornament, pine cone, etc. Make sure you put about 20 to 25 different objects in. Tie a ribbon or rope around the opening to make sure nobody peeks. Give everyone a piece of paper and pass the socks around at your party and tell them how many objects there are in the sock and have them write down all they can feel. Two socks just makes the game go a little faster. The person that guesses the most objects is the winner.

Christmas Carol Chaos - Sounds Like Fun!
Type: Team game
Number: Any number really, teams do not need even numbers
Winner: Team that figures out all 5 of their Christmas carols first
How to play: Divide group into teams. Each team sends one person up
to the Game Master who gives them the name of a Xmas carol. Person returns to group and, in the manner of Pictionary, tries to get the group to guess the name of the carol by DRAWING ONLY. As soon as the group knows the song, they must sing it as loud as they can. After singing, they send a new person for another song. Play continues until one group completes all five songs.
Hints: Make sure your group is well warmed up or they won't want to
sing. Also make the carols easy ones.
Items needed: Pen & Paper for each team. If your team is very large,
you may need a chalkboard, dry Erase board or big sheet of butcher paper on the wall so everyone can see.

Pin The Nose on the Reindeer
Holiday variation of Pin the tail on the Donkey. Create a picture of a reindeer's head. You can draw it or use construction paper, make sure you draw an outline for the nose, but don't complete it. You'll want the picture to go on a wall or flat surface. You'll also need to make noses to be placed on the picture. Red or black work great, or use different colours for each child so you can tell who placed which one where or just number the noses.
To play: Each child will be given a nose, you can use tape on one side of the nose so it sticks to the board. Blindfold the who's turn it is and spin them around 3-5 times, (so there a little dizzy) now point them in the direction of the reindeer (2-3 feet in front of it) and tell them to walk forward and place the nose on the reindeer. The one closest to the actual reindeer noses wins!
Pass The Bow (or apple or whatever fits the occasion)
Type: Team game
Number: Any number, about 6-15 players per team
Winner: Team that passes 6 bows down and back first
How to play: Have the teams line up side by side, either sitting or standing next to each other (they could hold hands if they wanted to). At one end of
the line, place the six Christmas bows (or apples). With their left hand have each player grab the right wrist of the person to their right. On the mark, teams pass all the bows down and back again. If a bow falls, players must retrieve while still holding on. The chain must not be broken!
Items needed: 6 objects for each team

Holiday Guess Games - Fun for any Holiday or office event
1) A law firm had a Christmas party last year. Our accountant was able to get childhood photos of each person who worked in the firm from spouses, family members, significant others, etc. It was a secret!!! At the party, she posted each picture on a huge white poster board with a number under each. Each member of the firm had to write down who they thought each person was. It was great fun!

2) The day before our Christmas party, our accountant secretly went around to each person's desk in the firm and snatched one somewhat 'personal' item off of their desk. At the party, she layed everything out on a table, each assigned with a number. Everyone had to figure out which item came from who's desk! It was a hoot to see who actually stays at their desk and works and who spends most of their days wandering around everyone else's office!!

Who's Santa - Fun for children
Rudolph is waiting for Santa so that all the children’s presents can be
delivered. He needs to find Santa, who is hiding.

Have all the children sit in a circle. One child is selected to be Rudolph and leaves the room while Santa is selected. One person from the
circle is elected to be the “Santa”, and then “Rudolph” is called back
to stand in the circle.
Once Rudolph returns Santa can start winking at people in the circle. Anyone who sees that they have been winked at lets out a loud, “HO! HO! HO! –Merry Christmas. Once Rudolph identifies Santa, you start again.

Christmas Fun - Twelve Days of Christmas
Great for larger offices over 30. Group everyone into 12 teams, it can be random or have people count off from 1-12. Then group the teams together and give each one a verse of the twelve days of Christmas. Each team was responsible for singing one verse of the song. As you know, the song repeats itself, with a new verse added each time. The best part of all is that as the teams sing their verse, they are to act out the verse (i.e. eight maids a milking, six geese a laying). It is hilarious to see the interpretations that each group had for what motions should be acted out. Each team should be allowed to gather together at first to determine what motions they plan to do. This game seems simple, but it is a riot!
